What is the difference between a mortgage broker and a bank?  The biggest differences are that a bank is typically a little more rigid in their guidelines for giving you a mortgage.   Banks, and brokers both typically give you a mortgage, and then sell your loan off to another company or the government.   Banks are initially giving you a mortgage themselves using their own underwriting guidelines.  They tend to be old fashion in their thinking and very conservative.   Mortgage brokers on the other hand have the ability to take your loan and place it with hundreds of lenders that are all competing to get your loan.  That is why in many cases even people who have been turned down by a bank can get a loan through a mortgage broker.
